History of Lincoln-Lancaster
County Genealogical Society
In the
spring of 1975, a group of Lincolnites was taking classes in genealogy through
Southeast Community College. There were some in the class who felt strongly that
Lincoln and Lancaster County needed a genealogy society to help each other and
to encourage others interested in genealogy.
In
November 1975, four of those ladies, Beth Haring, Louise Johnson, and Helen
Woolstrum along with their instructor, Anna Simmons, met on a Saturday
afternoon. From this meeting the nucleus of such an organization was born.
The first
meeting of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Genealogical Society was held the
evening of January 21, 1976 with 29 people in attendance. Starting September 1
1976, 78 members paid dues for 1976-1977.
LLCGS has
accomplished a variety of projects over the years.
Some of
the more notable include publishing over thirty publications for sale, adopting
bylaws and becoming a non-profit organization under IRS code 501(C) (3), and
hosting several seminars and conferences featuring national well-known speakers.
LLCGS now
has its own website
www.llcgs.info with some of the publications now online.

In the
words of Louise Johnson, (now deceased) one of the Founding Members, “Out of a
chilly November afternoon with cocoa and doughnuts, a society of over 200
members hunting their ancestors has grown. Look what curiosity, a cup of cocoa,
and a doughnut can create.”
Since that
time, the membership has grown to 260 and six of the charter members are still
members in 2008-2009.
The LLCGS
membership year begins Sept. 1 Memberships are accepted anytime throughout the
year, however membership dues received between July 1 and Sept. 1 each year will
provide for one full year of membership benefits. Memberships are only accepted
for one year at a time. The additional dues paid by patrons go specifically to
help finance the costs of our monthly educational programs.
Monthly
meetings and programs of the Lincoln-Lancaster Genealogical Society (LLCGS)
programs are held every second Tuesday of every month at 7:15 p.m. in the lower
level amphitheater of the E.N. Dick Administration Building on the Union College
campus, 3800 S. 48th St. Lincoln, Nebraska.
